Private Practice: Three Things To Research About Each Private School Before Enrolling Your Child

Lenny Bernard

Private schools make an excellent alternative to public schools for parents who want to have more control over their students' learning. Private schools heavily range in curriculum and in education style. Some schools have an intense focus on college preparation while other private institutions are focused on providing an internationally focused education to create worldly students. No matter the concentration that you desire, it is important to do some background research on a private school before you enroll your child. Here are three things to research before selecting a private school in which to enroll your children.

Look up the teachers

In many states, private schools can have their own qualifications for a teacher when it comes to education, career background, and experience. This can make it more difficult to determine if the teachers will have the skill set to teach your child in the manner that you are looking for. Before selecting a school, look up the school's website and do a little background searching on the teachers listed. LinkedIn and other resume websites are a good way to find and connect with the teachers of each school. the teacher's resume and job experience will give you a glimpse into those who will ultimately be responsible for instructing your child.

Look at alumni statistics

Many schools, especially private high schools and college preparatory academies keep statistics on the alumni who have filtered through the school. This information often includes the median or mean GPAs of each graduating class, the average amount of scholarships received, and the schools that the students were accepted to. Ask each school's office for a copy of the statistics for the school in order to take a look at the overall attainment of the graduating student body. If you see good scores and top schools on the list for alumni, you know that your children are in good academic hands.

Get to know the talk of the town about each school

Gossip is probably the last thing you would think of when it comes to educational research, but when it comes to learning about your children's possible private school, it is necessary to get the skinny on the institution. Ask around town to people who have children who go to private schools or people who have attended or worked at private schools in the area to find out any hidden information on the private schools in your area. Information that you want to listen out for is info on how well the students perform in comparison to other schools in the area, how the overall staff and faculty seem to get along with students and parents, and how former students enjoyed the experience. This information will help you make an informed decision on a private school with a reasonable touch of parental concern.

About Me
Helping Children Love Reading Through Book Fairs

Over the last 15 years, my favorite part about being an elementary teacher was seeing children light up when reading a favorite book. I always enjoy teaching children to read, comprehend, and fall in love with classic or modern stories. Because I feel that reading is so important, I always put a big emphasis on the annual book fair at our school. It's basically a holiday in my classroom, and we celebrate it with excitement and anticipation! I have taught my students how to treat books nicely and read the first couple of pages to see if they like the book. I started this website to share education ideas for elementary students, including my book fair celebration tips. Read my website to learn more about the wonderful world of teaching.
